Henry Hammond Tenmoku Ceramic Lidded Pot
Details
A vintage tenmoku glaze ceramic lidded pot by sought after English potter Henry Hammond. Created circa 1960s this rustic mid century ceramic earthenware bowl features an iridescent terracotta and black glaze and an off white speckle glazed inner, this beautifully crafted studio pottery piece would blend perfectly with farmhouse, vintage, retro and minimal home décor schemes.
Henry Hammond (1914 - 1989) is considered one of the most talented potters of the 20th century. After studying under William Staite Murray at the Royal College of Art in the 1930s and spending a short time collaborating with Bernard Leach at his pottery in St Ives, Hammond created pottery that combined the influence of Chinese exemplars with quintessentially English designs inspired by traditional motifs such as nature and landscapes, with brushwork that evoked the essence of the countryside in summer featuring dragonflies, leaping fish and flora and fauna blowing in the wind. Hammond joined the faculty of the world famous Farnham pottery department at West Surrey College of Art in 1946, ultimately becoming the Head of the department and ushering in what is widely regarded as the establishments most pivotal era. Due to focusing the majority of his energy on education rather than commercial efforts, pieces by Hammond are significantly rarer than those of his peers which make them highly collectable pieces for those who love traditional English craftsmanship.
